and so it goes

Just like I had planned we all went to bed early on Sunday night, ready for the week ahead.

By 7.30am Monday morning Poet's attempts at acrobatics failed miserably and she ended up on the floor with a swollen and bleeding nose. She now has a swollen black/blue/purple nose and is in the midst of the flu - her first. She is feverish, lethargic, glassy-eyed and miserable.

And so it goes.

Perhaps it's just pure coincidence but both my children have been terribly sick and suffered their first major fall just weeks out from their first birthday. Maybe I was naive to think I'd get through the first year without illness or injury. Maybe it's the necessary step before we sing happy birthday - a transition of sorts. From my experience with Che there is always a significant shift in awareness after a fever so I'm awaiting a more alert and lively Poet when this virus finally leaves.

For now though our days are slow. My plans for the week have been pushed aside and instead I'm spending my days nurturing, nourishing, consoling. I always think, in instances like this, that the words I share with my students as I prepare them for birth, are actually the perfect words to prepare them for motherhood.

Just like the birth journey we cannot always control, each and every day we surrender and ultimately we just have to go with the flow

And so it goes.

  2. That giving up control needs to be learnt over and over doesn't it

  4. Oh you poor thing Mama, I know that sickening feeling when one of our little chicks isn't well or worse still, injured. It is times like those that I'd like to wrap them in cotton wool and keep them next to me forever. But I guess part of being a good parent is to let them learn and just be there to pick up the pieces and guide the way. All part of the journey. Hope little Poet recovers well and quickly xo

  7. Poor poor Poet! That must have hurt. I always notice changes in the children after an illness. It's as if an illness signifies a new phase of childhood. Hoping they get over the flu quickly xxx

  8. I'm giving Poet AND her lovely mother a big hug. I always find that when my children are poorly I feel a trifle ill too; such a strong bond we feel for our children.

Jodi could you e-mail me your home address, please? You know what's coming don't you? ;-)

    Warmest wishes,

    Stephanie

  12. you poor thing...dealing with sick (and bruised!) kids is so exhausting. The first years are so hard as they seem to catch every bug going round. Try to console yourself in the knowledge that they are slowly but surely building up their immunity. Take care and we'll see you soon. xxx

  23. Ouch! sweet little Poet I hope you are well soon. We too are doing plenty of surrendering and going with the flow here on day 6 of River, Sol and I being sick. I have just now been praying to the Patience Fairies to bring me another dose of patience so I can see this flow through to the weekend when I am dreaming of us being well enough to venture out somewhere. anywhere. Best wishes to you in wellness x

  26. Hope things are on the mend : ) I remember my little boy fell a week before his first b'day - he was trying to reach my hands and fell onto my fingers - he ended up with a cut on his cheek which is there for all to see on his first b'day photos!
